Our ethos

We work hard to be 100% natural. We avoid machines; even our labels are hand made! We use old fashioned metal irons. We shun chemical dyes other weavers rely on and use only natural dyes and pure local silk.

We do our bit for the planet. We have pledged to respect nature. To reflect our concern, love and gratitude for nature, we choose the colours of the earth and motifs from the pristine nature around us, from its flora and fauna. We have zero wastage because we use every bit of 'waste' cloth. We want to create sustainable "slow" fashion through products you will never ever part with.

That's why we call our brand Oikko which means oneness and harmony between soul, soil and society.

We believe that to be greedy is not sustainable, to be grateful is. Sustainability for us is thus a way of thinking, a way of life.

Tussar: the wild silk

Tussar is a type of silk which is from silkworms that feed on plants that grow wild, unlike other silks which are cultivated in farms. That's why Tussar is known as "wild silk". It is famous for its natural golden colour and can also be dyed. Tussar silk is soft, delicate, airy and lustrous and becomes softer over time. There is a coarse variety of tussar silk too, called 'ketia'.

Tussar silk saree is considered a family heirloom in India and has been traditionally worn for auspicious occasions. It passes on through generations.
